One of our first projects is to make libraries active, where children are buzzing around, reading
books, talking books and fully experiencing the joy books can give.
An integral part of developing such libraries is GROWBY Reading, a comprehensive activity
based library program. Core to this program are children and books levelled as per children
reading levels. Each of the reading levels is highlighted by a color giving the program its’ name.
The librarian is supported by a set of activities to do in the library to make the library exciting.
Additionally book based activities are given which are used to encourage children to read
particular books, and share with their friends and family.
The program covers the primary classes from Class 1 to 7 and is available in 5 languages – English, Tamil, Urdu, Hindi and Kannada. The program has been remarkably successful and has been very easy to implement.
The program has transformed libraries, leading to children visiting more often, and reading more
books. Their reading levels have improved, and it has led to better reading fluency and
comprehension in them. Schools also report that children who read more do better at school, a
happy additional benefit.
This program was developed by Hippocampus and then offered to NGOs and CSR bodies to
setup libraries in government schools and community centres. Over the last decade the
program has reached out to thousands of libraries across the country. Some of the
organizations using the program include Room to Read(nation wide and globally), Akshara
Foundation, KPMG Foundation, Makkala Jagriti, 17000 feet foundation and the ALC schools in
Tamilnadu. It would not be an exaggeration to state that this program reaches out to a million
children annually.
